Abstract

Director Onogawa talks about the history and mission of UNCRD wherein avoidance of unbalanced development between urban and rural regions was a major concern in light of the Japanese experience of rapid economic development since the 1950s. UNCRD offers several training courses for middle level administrators coming from developing countries. Participants of such courses can receive follow-up contacts and advice after they return to their mother countries. Onogawa also argues about the UN role in human developments and world environmental problems where the UN and its subsidiary organs showed indispensable initiatives. He responds to Tanaka’s (an interviewer) comment on experience and the changing conditions of UNIDO which UNCRD endeavors to cooperate with. Finally Onogawa expects Nagasaki to play a leading role in international, and so to speak “face to face”, cooperation with foreign peoples.
